While Brooklyn’s “progressive” Democrats are still clamouring for the political demise of State Sen. Jesse Hamilton, (D-Brownsville, Crown Heights, East Flatbush, Gowanus, Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Prospect Lefferts Gardens, South Slope, Sunset Park.) State Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-Westchester) says all is forgiven and it’s time for Dems to return to a big tent political party.
Stewart-Cousins took the stage at this week’s Democratic Convention this to announce that New York’s Democrats are united under one conference.
Her call for continued unity was solidified with her endorsement for all Senate Democratic incumbents, including all the breakaway Senate Democrats who recently returned to the mainstream party and disbanding their Independent Democratic Conference, which had a ruling coalition with the majority Senate Republicans.
Among these breakaway Democrats from Brooklyn were both Hamilton and State Sen. Diane Savino (D-Coney Island, Staten Island).
“New York’s Senate Democrats have united together to fight back against Trump. We will band to together to pass bold legislation and shine a light on critical issues that matter to us. When Democrats vote, Democrats win! This September I will be supporting all of our incumbents, and I look forward to continuing to work alongside Senator Jesse Hamilton” said Andrea Stewart-Cousins”.
“I am honored to receive the endorsement of my leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins. Together we will break the barriers to make history with the first African-American woman majority leader. I am proud to rejoin the Democratic Party under her leadership and look forward to working together to move the state forward,” said Hamilton.
In endorsing Savino, Stewart-Cousins said Savino has proven to be a staunch advocate for progressive policies.
“Her work paved the path for medical marijuana in New York and is a strong advocate for our labor force. It is for these reasons that I have thrown my support behind her campaign for re-election, and I look forward to continuing our work together in Albany,” said Stewart-Cousins.
Savino responded that she was proud to work alongside Stewart-Cousins and under her leadership.
“Having the support of our leader, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, is an honor as I work to continue fighting for strengthening our gun regulations, increase patient access to medical marijuana, advocating for our state’s most vulnerable, and fortifying our working families from the federal government’s recent attacks,” said Savino.
