State Assemblyman Daniel Rosenthal (D-Kew Gardens Hills, Kew Gardens, Pomonok, Electchester, College Point) spent Sunday afternoon at the Jewish Center of Kew Gardens Hills in Flushing for a community fundraiser.
Rosenthal, who took office in November after a special election, conversed with fellow friends and community members in an ample, bright ballroom basement at the center. Several people provided checks to support the re-election campaign of the 27th Assembly District representative.
The Kew Gardens Hills resident shared a few comments to the dozen or so people in attendance, such as City Councilmember Barry Grondenchik (D-Bayside, Bellerose, Douglaston, Floral Park, Fresh Meadows, Oakland Gardens). Rosenthal even talked about his socks that caught the attention of some attendees.
“It’s become a thing in Albany,” he said. “They ask me every day what socks I’m wearing, and I have to make sure I’m on my game.”
Rosenthal said his first term in office was a “whirlwind” and felt pleased with the work so far. He talked about the numerous constituents that called and attended his office for help.
“With all of you together we can build a coalition that will allow us to continue to work and build our community,” he said.
He also talked about the late Michael Simanowitz, his predecessor, and his legacy throughout the assembly district.
“I have big shoes, figuratively and literally, to fill. I’m reminded of that every day. I get calls everyday that this is what Mike was able to do,” he said.
Jeff Kohn, president of the local JFK Democratic Club, moderated the event and highlighted his first professional interaction with Rosenthal when the assemblymember worked as a staff member for City Councilmember Rory Lancman (D-Fresh Meadows, Jamaica Hills, Briarwood).
Kohn inquired about a traffic concern between Main Street and Jewel Avenue that involved a sign that could affect the vision of motorists. Rosenthal responded and agreed with Ross. The traffic issue was resolved.
“We have a tradition of our community supporting our elected officials and, at the same time, getting supreme support back,” he said.
Simon Pelman, the local Democratic district leader, offered his support for Rosenthal and noted he would work with him in the future.
“Any elected official is only as good as the people that’s backing [him or her],” he said.
