Brooklyn Lawmakers Accepting Donated Supplies for Hurricane Harvey Victims
Congressmember Dan Donovan (R-South Brooklyn, Staten Island) State Senator Martin Golden (R-Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach) and Assembly member Nicole Malliotakis (R-Bay Ridge, Staten Island) announced that their offices will serve as drop-off locations for local residents to donate supplies for Hurricane Harvey victims yesterday.
Hurricane Harvey made landfall last Friday on the West Coast of Texas as a Category 4 storm with winds of 130 mph. Since first touching down, Harvey has overwhelmed residents with more than 50 inches of rain that has caused many residents to be displaced from their homes.
Residents may drop off donated materials including flashlights, batteries, new socks, toiletries, diapers, baby formula, cat and dog food, cleaning supplies and first aid supplies to the electeds’ offices. Local volunteers will gather the donated goods and store them at Catholic Charities’ Mount Loretto campus before they’re shipped to Texas.
“As Americans, it’s our duty to help one another in their time of need. After Sandy, people from across the country donated supplies to our community. Now we can return the favor. Let’s help our fellow Americans facing this tremendous hardship,” said Donovan.
“We must come together as a nation to help our fellow Americans in Texas. Hurricane Harvey has caused great devastation, damage and widespread human hardships. When faced with a catastrophe, Brooklynites have proven that they are always ready to lend a helping hand, open their wallets and provide assistance to those in need. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone impacted by this dangerous storm,” said Golden.
“Staten Islanders know first-hand the devastation a natural disaster can cause. When Hurricane Sandy hit our community, the response from across the nation was overwhelming. We must now help others who are suffering in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Today I join my colleagues, and all Staten Islanders, to extend a helping hand to our fellow Americans in Texas who have lost so much,” said Malliotakis.
The relief efforts are slated to start immediately and donors can drop off supplies between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. this week until September 1.
Drop-off locations:
Donovan’s Offices: 265 New Dorp Lane, Staten Island & 7308 13th Avenue, Brooklyn
Senator Golden’s Office: 7408 5th Avenue, 1st Floor, Brooklyn
Assemblywoman Malliotakis’ Office: 11 Maplewood Place, Staten Island
Menchaca Breaks Ground On First Of Five New Schools In Sunset Park
City Council member Carlos Menchaca (D-Red Hook, Sunset Park) broke ground on a brand new elementary school at 256 59th Street yesterday.
The new school is the first of five planned schools for Sunset Park in a bid to decrease overcrowding in the district. According to the plan, virtually one fifth of all new classroom seats slated for construction across all five boroughs will be built in Sunset Park.
In addition, Menchaca has pledged to fight for new dual-language programs in the new schools to support the ethnically diverse Sunset Park community.
“This groundbreaking marks the dawn of a new day in Sunset Park. Sadly, for too long, our students have been chronically underserved when it comes to education, crammed into classrooms with class sizes well beyond the capacity. This hurts students’ ability to grow and excel, especially in communities like ours with higher than average numbers of English Language Learners,” said Menchaca.
“But with construction now underway, we have a brighter future to look forward to. This is the result of a community coming together and working with their elected official to address a vital need. Today’s crucial step is just the latest in our effort to provide a new sense of opportunity for Sunset Park students,” added Menchaca.
