Golden Passes Child Abuse Prevention Bill
State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) praised the New York State Senate’s approval of his legislation Intro S. 233, that will study child abuse, yesterday.
Intro S.233 will establish a temporary New York State
Commission to study child abuse prevention and make recommendations for the implementation of child abuse prevention programs in New York State.
The bill would include programs that will address child abuse prevention and other aspects of family dynamics that threaten child and family well-being.
“There is no place in our homes, schools or society for child abuse, and the unfortunate reality is that it is happening all too often in New York. It is time that we take a stand against child abuse and make the prevention of such a priority. We must figure out how to reverse this trend that is damaging many families,” said Golden.
“Reports indicate that there are approximately 80,000 children found to be victims of child abuse and maltreated in New York State each year. These numbers require legislative action so that we can prevent the abuse of children and save families in our State,” Golden.
The bill has been sent to the Assembly. Assemblywoman Sandy Galef (D-95th District) is the sponsor of A.5769.

Treyger, Harris Denounce Removal Of Overnight Station Cleaners From R Line
Council Member Mark Treyger (D-Coney Island, Bensonhurst) and Assembly member Pamela Harris (D-Coney Island, Bay Ridge) denounced the recent decision by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to remove overnight cleaners from the Bay Ridge/Sunset Park R line subway stations yesterday.
Overnight station cleaners were removed from all R line subway stations between 95th Street and Prospect Avenue, excluding 36th Street.
“We strongly disagree with the MTA’s decision to remove overnight cleaning crews from R train stations in Southern Brooklyn. Residents in the Bay Ridge/Sunset Park areas already have to deal with overburdened, overcrowded, and frequently delayed R-train service; now the MTA is putting the health and safety of these riders at risk, as well. We support and stand in agreement with the Transit Workers Union, and call on the MTA to ensure that late-night train riders do not have to wait alone on empty, filthy subway platforms,” said Treyger and Harris in a joint statement.
