Progressives from across the city gathered at Sirico’s Caterers, 8023 13th Avenue in Dyker Heights to celebrate the official launch of the Young Democrats of South Brooklyn, a new political club for the New York City metro area. The party included a fully cater sit-down brunch. Over one hundred people were in attendance.

Guest speaker Andrew Fisher, Esq., a prominent Brooklyn attorney, gave an inspiring talk encouraging millennials to get involved in politics, reminding young people to take responsibility for the policies that will shape their world in the future. He was followed by City Councilman Mark Treyger, whose stirring speech focused on how political change on the national level begins at home.  The third and final speaker, Assemblyman William Colton, called the launch party an “historic event,” due to all the volunteer and activist work the club has planned for the coming year.

Also in attendance were a number of other elected officials, including Assemblyman Peter Abbate, District Leaders Nancy Tong, Charles Ragusa, and Ari Kagan. Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, was represented by Winnie Greco.

Young Democrats of South Brooklyn is an energetic and diverse collaboration of young adults working together to uphold progressive values through civic engagement and community activism. The club looks forward to promoting strong ties in the community through service and including members from all walks of life.

Following the meeting, Treyger said he was impressed with the young members and felt the future looked bright with young people looking to get involved in the political process.

“As a former high school civics teacher, engaging our young people to become participants in an inclusive democracy is a task I take very seriously. Now more than ever, we need a generation of engaged, inspired, and invested young people who will stand united and fight for the issues that matter. Creating change on a macro level begins with important victories at the micro level,” said Treyger.

“I have no doubt that the Young Dems of South Brooklyn can and will build momentum by doing just that. I was proud to join Assemblyman William Colton and District Leaders Nancy Tong and Charlie Ragusa at this inaugural event, and I am confident that Kenny Zheng and the entire Young Dems team will affect positive change in out community.”
