The Maimonides Cancer Center, Brooklyn’s only full-service cancer center, was recently awarded the 2016 Outstanding Achievement Award by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.

Maimonides is one of a select group of 22 accredited cancer programs across the nation to receive this honor, and one of only two in New York State for the year 2016.

“The official ‘stamp-of-approval’ with seven commendations from an independent agency of such stature is clear indication that we are fulfilling our mission for the residents of Brooklyn and beyond,” said Kenneth D. Gibbs, President and CEO of Maimonides,

Hundreds of American cancer programs earn accreditation, but few attain perfect scores in the process. The Outstanding Achievement Award recognizes the Maimonides Cancer Center for excellence in care and commitment, and in exceeding the standards set by the Commission on Cancer.

“We consistently bring our patients the latest advances in cancer care,” said Dr. Patrick Borgen, Chair of Surgery and head of the Breast Cancer Program at Maimonides. “And our team is among the most innovative and experienced in the nation.”

“It’s that word ‘team’ that really makes the difference in the quality of care we provide,” agreed Dr. Jay Cooper, Chair of Radiation Oncology. “We collaborate across all specialties to bring the very best treatment plans to our patients.”

Dr. Kevin Becker, Director of Hematology & Medical Oncology, summed it up. “Our patients are individuals, each with a unique situation. Our team approach ensures that each gets the benefit of our collective expertise.”

The cancer specialists at Maimonides are investigators in cutting-edge clinical trials and provide post-graduate medical education in accredited residency and fellowship programs. More than 1,000 newly diagnosed cancer cases each year are treated at the Maimonides Cancer Center where the full array of cancer diagnostics, treatments and supportive services are available in a single, convenient location.
