Jaime Williams Reacts To Fatal Shooting Of Correctional Officer
Assemblywoman Jaime Williams (Canarsie, Georgetown, Mill Basin, Marine Park and Gerristen Beach) called for increased vigilance and justice following the fatal shooting of a rookie Department of Corrections officer in the relatively quiet and tranquil family oriented neighborhood of Georgetown.
Off-duty city correction officer Alastasia Bryan, 25, of East New York, was fatally shot while sitting in her car at about 9:15 p.m., Dec. 4 near Avenue L and E. 73rd Street. in the Georgetown section of the borough.
“The loss of such a cornerstone of our community will not go unnoticed nor be in vain. We will seek justice for this young woman and make sure further tragedies such as this are avoided, we will do everything we can to support the officer’s family during this time and we will not rest until the assailant or assailants are brought to justice,” said Williams.
“We have faith in the NYPD and the 63rd Precinct in assuring that this incident is solved. We are grateful and thankful for their immediate response and swift action. Incidents such as this, rarely if ever occur in our community and we have the utmost faith in our elected officials and the NYPD to insure that events like these will be prevented in the future” said Adam Diamond, President of the Georgetown Civic Association.
Additional patrols have been put into place and Williams, along with other elected officials, are working in conjunction with the 63rd Precinct to bring a finality and conclusion to this matter and help secure the area. As of this post, no arrests have been made.
Clarke Calls For Obama To Protect Of DACA Kids
Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (Flatbush, Crown Heights, Sheepshead Bay) yesterday released the following statement concerning a letter she and more than 100 of her colleagues sent to President Obama urging him to prevent the misuse of information involving participants in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
Since the program was established in 2012, more than 740,000 young men and women have obtained Social Security numbers and work permits, and have been allowed to remain in the United States without the threat of deportation.
“DACA has allowed hundreds of thousands of young people who know this nation as their only home to remain here and pursue the American Dream, by completing their education, starting businesses, and gaining employment. I am deeply concerned that the incoming presidential administration has verbally expressed contempt for this very vulnerable segment of our population and will attempt to misuse the information provided by DACA participants by literally following through on threats of deportations,” said Clarke.
“These young women and men have increasingly become a significant part of the fabric of our community and are a vital part of our civil society, whose aspirations we should support. With their information and that of their families readily accessible to the incoming administration through the data that was collected in the administering of the DACA program, it is imperative that all that can be done should be done to protect these young people from this looming threat. We call on President Obama to exercise his authority to protect the 740,000 people enrolled in DACA and prevent the exploitation of personal information that was submitted to the Department of Homeland Security.”
Jumaane Williams On Carson Appointment As HUD Secretary
City Council Member Jumaane D. Williams (Flatbush, East Flatbush, Midwood), issued the following statement in regard to President-elect Donald Trump nominating Ben Carson as Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
“Ben Carson’s nomination as Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development is ill-advised, irresponsible and hovers on absurdity. It does however follow a line of off-putting appointments made by President-elect Trump. While Carson has had a distinguished career in the medical field, the same cannot be said for policy or urban planning and development.
“As Chair of the City’s Committee on Housings and Buildings, I know how critical housing policy is, and the immeasurable effects it has on families and communities. Housing is not a play thing that can be taken lightly; it is the rubric of healthy families and the glue that binds vibrant communities. Overcoming a ‘troubled youth in the inner city of Detroit,’ and growing up in public housing does not make Carson qualified to hold this important position.
“During the campaign, housing policy was almost never mentioned other than in vague soundbites to describe how difficult life is for Black people, who President-elect Trump always correlated with ‘inner cities.’ His casual regard during the campaign for such an important issue that affects millions has come full circle with this nomination.
“This flippant disregard to the importance of housing makes the work of municipalities that much harder and exponentially more important. I call on the Administration and City Council to redouble efforts to use all the tools available to ensure quality, income targeted housing.”
Schneiderman Busts Fake Attorney Scamming Brooklynites
Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman yesterday announced the indictment of Mikhail Perlov for allegedly defrauding unsuspecting clients, particularly in Brooklyn’s Russian community, by passing himself off as a licensed attorney.
From 2013 to 2016, Perlov allegedly held himself out as a lawyer in New York, defrauding multiple victims of tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees. Perlov allegedly continued his illegal practice of law despite entering into a Consent Order and Judgment with the Attorney General’s Office in September 2015, which permanently banned him from misrepresenting himself as an attorney.
Yesterday’s 18-count indictment charges Perlov with multiple counts of felony grand larceny and scheme to defraud. If convicted, Perlov faces up to 2 1/3 to 7 years in prison.
“This defendant has time and time again held himself out as a resource to many in the immigrant community, but instead has allegedly lined his own pockets at the expense of vulnerable New Yorkers,” said Schneiderman. “This type of fraud is particularly egregious as its preys on those who are in need of legal assistance. My office will remain vigilant against fraudsters who target our immigrant communities, particularly at a time of heightened fear and anxiety.”
According to a petition previously filed in Kings County Supreme Court an investigation by the Attorney General’s Brooklyn Regional Office revealed that Perlov advertised himself as an “attorney at law” in Russian-language newspapers and targeted Russian-speaking victims.
Perlov claimed to have a wide expertise and extensive experience practicing in New York, New Jersey and Florida courts, and offered legal services related to criminal defense, commercial disputes, accidents, domestic violence, real estate and immigration matters.
