Schumer on Haley Nomination As Ambassador To The United Nations

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer
U.S. Senator Charles Schumer

U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer, the Senate’s minority Leader released the following statement on the nomination of Nikki Haley to be the Ambassador to the United Nations.

President-elect Donald Trump nominated Haley, the current governor of South Carolina last week. Congress must approve of the nomination.

“The United Nations has been biased against Israel for many decades, and I am strongly opposed to the U.N continuing to put pressure on Israel through one-sided resolutions. Peace must come from direct negotiations between the two parties, not by imposed terms from the United Nations,” said Schumer.

“Aside from representing the United States and pursuing our strategic goals at the United Nations, one of the most important jobs the UN Ambassador has is to stick up for one of America’s most trusted and loyal and strategic allies — Israel.  I hope that Governor Haley shares that view, and look forward to hearing from her on this issue, and many others, as she seeks confirmation by the Senate.”

City Councilman Jumaane Williams
City Councilman Jumaane Williams

City Council Members Jumaane Williams (Flatbush, East Flatbush, Midwood) and Rory I. Lancman Queens) las week released the following joint statement after a crane collapse killed two construction workers today in Briarwood, Queens.

Lancman is the council’s Chairman of the Courts and Legal Services Committee. Williams is the Chair of the Housing and Buildings Committee, released the following joint statement

“We would like to offer our prayers of peace and comfort to the families of the workers who died. The tragic death of two construction workers at a non-union job site in Queens is a stark reminder of the dangerous conditions that workers face in our city. We cannot take a backseat role when it comes to the safety of our workers, especially during windy conditions like those today. What’s most alarming is that a recent Crain’s report showed a third of construction deaths last year were uncounted by the administration. The City must stay vigilant in preventing fatalities as well as monitoring sites – especially after a tragedy – so it can examine how to remedy safety breakdowns on that location and other sites,” the lawmakers said.

“We cannot ignore safety just so we can keep up with the construction boom taking place in the city. While the City has made real efforts to improve safety on job sites, this tragic accident is evidence that much more needs to be done as soon as possible. We owe it to the workers.”
