In what is expected to be a competitive primary election for both the 46th Assembly District seat and the corresponding male and female Democratic District leader seats, insurgent Assembly candidate Kate Cucco and her team of male district leader candidate Chris McCreight and female district leader candidate Brigitte Purvis, were first out of the gate yesterday in submitting over 3,000 signatures with the Board of Elections to get on the Sept. 13 primary ballot.
Meanwhile, incumbent Assemblywoman Pamela Harris‘ team consisting of City Councilman Mark Treyger (Coney Island, Bensonhurst) for male district leader and Dilia Schack for female district leader did not return calls or emails for comment. The district includes Coney Island, Bay Ridge and parts of Dyker Heights and Brighton Beach.
Yesterday was the first day for all primary candidates to turn in petitions with the end filing date being Thursday. In order to get on the ballot 500 signatures of registered Democrats in the district are required.
“I am humbled by the outpouring of support for my candidacy and thankful for those who signed my petition,” Cucco said. “The strength of this grassroots operation will be instrumental to the success of my campaign. The people of the 46th Assembly District have shown that they believe in my vision that it’s time to fix Albany by enacting strict ethics reforms, increasing transparency, making the legislature full-time, and banning outside income because too often laws are passed benefitting the politicians who wrote them and that is just wrong. They believe we need better laws protecting tenants, free tuition to CUNY or SUNY for any New Yorker with a B average or higher, and greater investments in fixing our crumbling infrastructure and increasing mass transit options.”
Purvis said she was ecstatic by the wide breadth of support their unity campaign has received from all corners of the district.
“People are tired of broken promises and backroom deals,” said Purvis. “Kate, Chris, and I all believe that by working together and by bringing our agenda directly to the people, we have a huge opportunity to make real change both in Democratic politics locally and in the state legislature.”
McCreight said for the past month volunteers tirelessly have been knocking on doors from Bay Ridge to Brighton Beach to collect signatures and he owes his place on the ballot to their hard work and dedication and they deserve a huge amount of thanks.
“I look forward to the next stage of the campaign but it’s really going to be like the previous 6 months: knocking on doors, talking to voters, and sharing our message of putting New Yorkers back in charge of their government,” said McCreight.
