Cymbrowitz Happy That City Stalls On Bag Tax

Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz
Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz

Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz (Sheepshead Bay, Manhattan Beach, Brighton Beach), said yesterday he wan encouraged by the City Council Sanitation Committee vote to delay implementation of the five-cent fee from October 2016 to February 2017.

“The time must be used wisely to kill the onerous fee entirely and instead find a solution that will achieve the intended goal of protecting and preserving the environment,” said Cymbrowitz.

Cymbrowitz has been working with Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and other lawmakers to overturn the fee. He is a co-sponsor of A.9904, which would prohibit the imposition and/or collection of any tax, fee or local charge on carry-out merchandise bags.

Moreover, as a member of the Assembly’s Environmental Conservation Committee, Cymbrowitz also believes “New Yorkers should be not just angry but enraged that the emphasis has suddenly shifted from advocating for already existing recycling plastic bag programs – which can be successful if they’re pushed properly — to charging residents for the city’s own failure to execute sound environmental policy.”

“Plastic bags are not single use items — they are both reusable and recyclable. Since 2009, New York State has proven that recycling plastic bags is possible and the City should figure out how to remove and recycle bags before they reach landfills, not how to nickel-and-dime New Yorkers,” he added.

Assemblyman Cymbrowitz has been circulating an online petition against the bag fee. Residents may sign it here: http://assembly.state.ny.us/mem/Steven-Cymbrowitz/story/70078.

Donovan Wants Full 911 Transcripts Of Orlando Shooter

Congressman Dan Donovan
Congressman Dan Donovan

Congressman Dan Donovan (Southern Brooklyn/Staten Island) said yesterday that the Obama Administration should release the full 911 telephone transcripts that Orlando massacre shooter Omar Mateen made over several hours as he shot and killed 49 people in the gay nightclub, Pulse.

“Is anybody unaware of what ideology and organization inspired the Orlando terrorist? He hatefully slaughtered innocent people because of their sexuality, and justified it by saying he did so in the name of Islam. He and other extremists have distorted an entire religion for their own disgusting purposes, and everybody knows it,” said Donovan.

“Our own government has no business censoring 911 transcripts to remove references to what inspired this maniac. The American people deserve a full, clear picture of what we’re fighting. The Obama Administration should release an unredacted and complete transcript.”
