Judging from the recent NBC online special, the charismatic Brandon Washington – the first Black president of the Brooklyn Young Republican Club – the nation’s reportedly oldest Republican Club, has a great political future ahead of him.
Washington was picked in the NBC News inaugural NBCBLK28 list, which began on Feb. 1 honoring 28 game changers, all 28 years and younger, for 28 days. Each day this month, the site will reveal a profile of an entrepreneur, policy, maker, athlete, entertainer, activist, or artist in honor of Black History Month.
Some of the honorees are household names, others are unsung heroes. The candidates selected are leaders in their industry. They are breaking barriers and smashing stereotypes about the black community and diaspora, redefining what it means to be Black in America. Their accomplishments are aligned with the NBCBLK mission: Elevating the conversation on black identity, politics, and culture.
“Brandon really embodies the mission behind this list — highlighting young people who aren’t afraid of breaking the mold. He is an unapologetically black conservative, living the counter narrative and he’s proud of it,” said Amber Payne, Managing Editor, NBC News’ NBCBLK.
“I was fascinated by his backstory. He grew up in a Democratic household but it was actually President Obama’s election that inspired him to embrace his conservative values. I think he illustrates the fact that the black voting bloc — and the youth bloc — is not monolithic,” she added.
