Hamilton Targets Youths In Mental Health Bill

State Sen. Jesse Hamilton
State Sen. Jesse Hamilton

Central Brooklyn State Senator Jesse Hamilton and Bronx Assemblyman Marcos A. Crespo yesterday launched legislation that provides a critical link between New York youth and better mental health.

The measure, dubbed Mental Health First Aid Bill, will create a continuing education requirement for teachers relating to mental health issues in schools. It has large support among experts in the field of mental health for youth.

“Mental health impacts children’s readiness to learn just as surely as having the right textbooks, up-to-date technology, or school meals. That’s why this legislation aims at sharpening the expertise of educators across New York State,” said Hamilton.

“This Mental Health First Aid Bill will contribute to our schools’ ability to promote wellness. Educators will be better able to assess risks and make that critical first link towards help. This measure will help strengthen the infrastructure of mental health care in our communities and I am proud to be joined by so many colleagues, and advocates concerned about education, mental health, and promoting the well-being of youth in our state.”

Sheepshead Bay Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz and the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce have announced the expansion of the Chamber’s Navigator program to the lawmaker’s district office.

A Navigator representative will give constituents one-on-one support in enrolling in a health care plan in the New York State of Health Marketplace. Help will be available in English and Russian.

“Finding the right health care plan for you and your family can be a confusing and onerous process if you don’t have someone guiding you through the various options,” said Cymbrowitz.  “I commend the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce for graciously bringing their expertise to my office to provide individualized support to my constituents.”

“The expansion of the Brooklyn Chamber’s Navigator program will increase residents’ access to our health care services, helping the Chamber ensure more people are covered in more areas of the borough than ever before,” said Brooklyn Chamber President & CEO Carlo A. Scissura. “I would like to thank Assemblyman Cymbrowitz for partnering with the Chamber and for taking the steps to create a healthier Kings County overall.”

New York State of Health, the Official Health Plan Marketplace, is the best place to find a low-cost, quality health plan for you and your family, the right place to find plan choices from brand-name companies, and the only place to get financial help paying for health insurance.

The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce was awarded a multiyear contract to provide Navigator services for the Affordable Care Act.

The program launches from 3-7 p.m. on Monday January 25 at Cymbrowitz’ 1800 Sheepshead Bay Road Office (between Emmons Avenue and Shore Parkway). The one-on-one health services are by appointment only. Note that the last appointment time is at 6 p.m.

The program return from 3-6 p.m., Tuesday, February 9 and Wednesday, February 24. Additional dates will be announced.

Gentile Designates Youth Organizations For A Defibrillator

Bay Ridge City Councilman Vincent Gentile this week designated four youth organizations to get an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), which is a crucial medical equipment in saving lives of people having heart attacks.

Under the Beating Hearts Initiative, which the City Council funded to the tune of $350,000 in the current FY16 budget, each council member chose four non-DFTA (Department for the Aging) senior centers and/or youth serving organizations to receive an AED.

The objective of Beating Hearts is to ensure organizations are properly equipped for cardiac arrest emergencies. Research has shown that early intervention during a heart attack increases an individual’s chance of survival. Sudden cardiac arrests outside of hospitals are responsible for an estimated 160,000 deaths a year nationally. Death may be averted with swift action using a defibrillator in instances where heart attacks are caused by an abnormal heart rhythm.

Current DFTA funded senior centers are already equipped with AED’s.  Gentile selected the Parkville Youth Organization, Ridge Chorale, St. Ephrem Youth Program, and the 68th Precinct Youth Council to receive an AED.

“AEDs are vital to the survival rates of those who are inflicted by sudden cardiac arrest. The designated youth-service organizations which host athletic events will now be properly equipped in the unfortunate event of an emergency on-site,” said Gentile.

Each organization will be required to send four individuals to be trained on CPR and use of AED. Each organization will also receive cabinets to store AEDs at the organization’s place of business. Trainings and AED Placement will begin in February and end in June 2016.
