Sheepshead Bay City Councilman Chaim Deutsch announced a new initiative to bring basic CPR training to the 48thCouncil District, which also includes Brighton Beach, Brightwater Towers, Luna Park, Madison, Manhattan Beach, Midwood and Trump Village
The initiative is in conjunction with the Fire Department and several of his elected colleagues that represent parts of hist district and/or adjacent districts from their respective branches of government. The initiative will host a series of community events around the district that will combine a CPR training, fire safety education, and a smoke alarm giveaway.
“It is extremely important for people to be educated in basic CPR techniques. A grandparent watching a grandchild, for example, can utilize CPR to literally save the life of a small child in a potentially dangerous situation. At a restaurant, advance knowledge of the Heimlich Maneuver can save valuable seconds in a life-saving effort,” said Deutsch. “In addition, fire safety education and having an advance plan in case of an emergency, are hugely effective fire prevention measures. In the event of a fire, a smoke alarm is generally the first warning for residents to evacuate the home and call 911. I am proud to partner with the FDNY and my colleagues in government in order to educate the community about these vital issues.
This first event will be co-hosted by Councilman Jumaane Williams, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, Senator Simcha Felder, Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte, and Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein.
“We have seen some devastating fires throughout Brooklyn, including in my district, over the past year. As elected officials, we must do all we can to make sure that our constituents know what to do to prevent fires, including installing smoke detectors, and what to do to respond to a fire, including immediate CPR administration if needed. It is my hope that these efforts will save lives, and I am proud to work with the FDNY, and my colleagues in government on this effort,” said Williams.
“We know that when people are training in proper cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques and have comprehensive fire safety training and access to smoke detectors, we have the ability to save lives. A founder of the Flatbush Shomrim and a member of the Committee on Public Safety, Council Member Deutsch remains dedicated to improving the quality of emergency services in Brooklyn,” said Clarke.
“The issues of CPR, fire safety training, and access to and information about smoke detectors are extremely important, and lifesaving. They are issues that bear repeating over and over again to avoid tragedies such as the one that occurred earlier this year. That’s why I am glad to join Councilmember Deutsch and others to continue to get the word out and that is why I will be introducing legislation that will help underwrite and expand access to smoke detectors,” said Bichotte.
“There is nothing more important that protecting our loved ones. We must do everything in our power to keep our families from potential harm, G-d forbid. I am thankful to the FDNY and Councilman Deutsch for organizing this valuable safety event and am proud to be a part of it,” said Felder.
“We have been witness to countless incidents in the past in which these invaluable tips could have saved lives. It’s not a case of if, but when, someone is surely to benefit from the instruction this evening and I thank Councilman Deutsch for arranging this workshop for my constituents,” said Weinstein.
The first event is slated for between 7-8 p.m., Tuesday, November 24, at PS 193, on Bedford Avenue and Avenue L.
