The Kings County Democratic Party’s Judicial Convention last night ended with the nominations of four jurists currently serving as acting State Supreme Court Judges to become full-Supreme Court Judges, and one current sitting Supreme Court Judge to come up for re-election.
Judge Tom Aliotta is up for re-election and acting Supreme Court Judges Genine Edwards, Pamela Fisher, Debra Silber and Noach Dear will be up for becoming official Supreme Court judges. New York State Supreme Court Judges serve 14 year terms and are paid $174,000 annually.
The Republican and Conservative Parties also cross-endorsed the candidates. The only objections of the roughly 110 judicial delegates came from Assembly Members Charles Barron and Rodneyse Bichotte, and a woman named Joy (perhaps District Leader Nayo J. Simmons), who works with Barron, according to Kings County Democratic Party Chair Frank Seddio.
“We selected a variety of Judges. It is clearly a diverse group representing all factions of the Democratic Party. In my mind this group is truly representative of Brooklyn,” said Seddio.
“Our future goal to to seek candidates from the Asian and Russian community. As of this date none of these communities have someone on the bench. I’m also concerned about the shrinkage of candidates from the Hispanic community. I want to encourage attorneys from the Hispanic community to become more involved in the political process so we can have more variety,” he added.
Barron and Bichotte had no comment for KCP.
