Parker Leads Electeds In Community Shred Day
Midwood State Senator Kevin Parker yesterday in partnership with NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, Assembly Members Nick Perry and Rodneyse Bichotte and Councilman Jumanne Williams gave residents an opportunity to have their private materials shredded and recycled during annual Community Shred Day.
“Identity theft is a growing epidemic, so providing residents with a safe and secure method to dispose of their sensitive information is vital today more than ever before,” said Parker. “The sheer number of people who attended today’s event proves that many people are concerned on some level about becoming a victim identity theft. Shred Day is more than just about shredding random old documents and paper.”
AARP New York sponsored the event. Paper materials were collected at Flatbush Gardens, 1368 New York Avenue in Flatbush. Acceptable items included personal files, junk mail, receipts, file folders, envelopes, bank statements, official forms, old checkbooks and expired or unwanted credit cards.
Clarke Congratulates Medgar Evers College On Winning Grant
Flatbush Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke released the following statement congratulating Medgar Evers College on earning a grant under the Predominately Black Institutions Competitive Grant Program from the United States Department of Education.
The five-year grant – for $600,000 in the initial period – will allow the college to create programs that support the academic achievement of students.
“I want to commend President Rudolph F. Crew and his team at Medgar Evers College on earning this highly-competitive five-year grant, which will allow the college to create programs that assist students in remaining enrolled and completing their course of study. It will also support programs that promote highly-effective teaching methods that connect with students. . Since it was established in 1970, Medgar Evers College has offered students an excellent opportunity both to study the liberal arts and to prepare for a professional career at a cost affordable for families in Brooklyn,” said Clarke.
“As the representative of the 9th Congressional District of New York, which includes Medgar Evers College, I will continue to work with Dr. Crew, his team and the entire community of Medgar Evers College to support these programs and expand opportunity in Brooklyn,” she added
Through the efforts of Clarke, Predominately Black Institutions were recognized in the 2007 reauthorization of the Higher Education Act; the Predominately Black Institutions Competitive Grant Program was a result of this recognition.
19th Senate District Race: Persaud Gets 1199 Backing
Canarsie Assembly Member Roxanne Persaud yesterday received the backing of the powerful 1199SEIU healthcare workers union in the 19th Senate District Nov. 3 special election.
The seat opened up with this year’s felony conviction of former Sen. John Sampson. The district includes Canarsie, East New York, Flatlands, Mill Basin, Brownsville, Bergen Beach, and parts of the Marine Park and Sheepshead Bay neighborhoods of Brooklyn.
“Roxanne is a tireless advocate for working families in her Brooklyn neighborhood, and in a short time has put together an impressive record of fighting for the people in her district,” said Kevin Finnegan of 1199SEIU. “We strongly support her candidacy for the State Senate and we look forward to working with her on providing access to healthcare, and educational and job opportunities for Brooklyn families.”

Williams Recruits Students For Youth Task Council
Flatlands Council Member Jumaane D. Williams announced open registration for “Students Taking Action Today” (S.T.A.T.), a youth task council he founded in 2012 to help engage the future leaders of District 45.
The council, which is open to all high school students, will have its first meeting on Friday, September 25, at Council Member Williams’ district office located at 4517 Avenue D, Brooklyn, NY 11203. All high school students in District 45 are welcome to attend.
S.T.A.T. offers a unique experience for teens to learn about important issues in the community, inform their peers of these issues and then take action to better the district. Members work regularly with Council Member Williams’ office to plan and execute community programs like the Pre-Labor Day Senior Concert, Youth Empowerment Summit, Youth/Senior Holiday Party, Back-to-School Supply Drive, Easter Egg Hunt, Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway, and his “Not in My Hood” Anti-Violence March and Community Resource Fair.

Lander Kicks Off Ferry Service Expansion
Park Slope City Council Member Brad Lander along with representatives from NYC Economic Development Corporation and the Trust for Governors Island will announce details of the city’s expansion of ferry service on peak days between Brooklyn’s Pier 6 and the Island on Sunday.

The day long extravaganza of local making and creativity, turns the traditional harvest festival on its ear, and hosts an array of games, crafts, food, music, demonstrations and family friendly workshops led by Brooklyn based participants.The event is free and open to the public, but those interested are encouraged to reserve tickets by clicking here. The Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum is New York City’s oldest house, c. 1652. Situated on an acre and a half of public park land, the Museum preserves the national historic landmarked house, offers tours of the house to the public and school groups, and runs an active demonstration garden. Workshops, open-house days, community events, and tours are an opportunity to learn about everyday life in colonial New York and early farming practices.
The Vanguard Independent Democratic Association (VIDA) will hold their monthly meeting from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 372 Tompkins Avenue (corner of Putnam). Both members and interested parties are invited to attend.
Marine Park’s 19th annual chamber music series at Good Shepherd Church begins on October 4 with a performance by Brooklyn Baroque, a trio featuring a harpsichord, flute and cello.
The concerts take place on 11 consecutive Sundays, at 6 p.m., at Good Shepherd Church, Avenue S at Brown Street.
While admission is free and open to the public, voluntary donations for the performers are encouraged. Michael Fontana, the music director, said: “This series has become a cultural treasure for the southern end of Brooklyn. It’s an opportunity for people to hear some outstanding solo musicians and ensembles in a beautiful setting.”
