Cuomo Administration Attorney Dies
Carey W. Gabay, 43, an attorney in Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration, died yesterday a littler than a week after being shot in the head during a predawn celebration in Crown Heights. The Bronx-raised, Harvard-educated attorney lived in Clinton Hill with his wife.
“It is with profound sadness that we learn of the passing of Carey Gabay,” said Cuomo in a statement. “Carey was the epitome of an outstanding public servant. He held a tremendous commitment to his community, and he chose to use his many talents to better the lives of others. New York is undeniably a better place today because of his service. He was also a friend and role model to the many people who were blessed to have known him, and he will be greatly missed.
“I ask that all New Yorkers please join me in keeping Carey’s family in their thoughts and prayers – especially his wife Trenelle Gabay, his mother and stepfather Audrey and Rupert McNaughton, his sisters Crystal Gabay Nurse and Stephanie Gabay Smith, his brother Aaron McNaughton, and his mother-in-law Rosemarrie Campbell. No one should have to experience the pain of losing someone they love to random gun violence, and his family is in our thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.”

Lander Increases of Turnstiles at 7th Ave Subway Stop
Park Slope City Council Member Brad Lander announced that last year’s participatory budgeting proposal to increase the number of turnstiles at the 7th Avenue subway station will move forward.
The idea to improve the station’s turnstiles gained traction in Lander’s participatory budgeting process last year, and was especially popular with voters tired of standing in line to enter the station during rush hour. While the project was not one of the top vote getters, the MTA will be advancing a proposal that mirrors last year’s PB project. That includes:
- Increasing the total number of turnstiles in the station
- Replacing high entry-exit turnstiles with arrays of ‘high speed’ waist-high turnstiles at both the 7th Avenue and 8th Avenue ends.
- Moving the station agent booth from the middle of the station to the 7th Avenue end of the station, which the majority of the station’s ridership uses.
“We hear so many good ideas every year through participatory budgeting, and I’m thrilled to see our government agencies using PBNYC to listen to the concerns of New Yorkers, even when the projects don’t win funding right away,” said Lander.
The MTA has not yet released plans for the 7th Ave. station project, but will present details at the Community Board 6 Transportation Committee meeting tonight.
Lander recently kicked off the 2015-2016 Participatory Budgeting cycle. The process will begin with two neighborhood assemblies to be held in the coming weeks. Details available at bradlander.nyc/
Treyger Lights Parachute Jump To Raise Awareness Of Childhood Cancer
Coney Island City Council Member Mark Treyger is partnering with Zamperla and advocates including Frankie’s Mission to once again host the lighting of the iconic Coney Island Parachute Jump.
The entire community is invited to attend the lighting to show their support for the many families throughout Brooklyn and New York City who are courageously battling childhood cancer. In addition to the lighting of the Parachute Jump, the event will include a performance by Art’s House Dance, an appearance by the Brooklyn Cyclones’ Sandy the Seagull and other children’s activities.
“This is a small but important gesture by our community to show these families that they are not alone in their fight against childhood cancer. I want to thank everyone at Frankie’s Mission and all of the advocates for their inspiring work each day throughout the year and Zamperla for again agreeing to help host this year’s event. It was incredibly moving to see all of the support at last year’s lighting, and I look forward to joining residents and families from across Brooklyn on Friday as Coney Island’s iconic Parachute Jump once again ‘Goes Gold’ in support of childhood cancer,” said Treyger.
The event activities is slated to begin at 7 p.m. tomorrow night, Sept. 18, at the base of the Parachute Jump along the Riegelmann Boardwalk near W. 19th Street. For more information call Treyger’s office at (718) 373-9673.
