Clarke Attacks Republicans On Economy
Flatbush Congresswoman Yvette Clarke utilized last week’s Department of Labor report announcing that the economy added 215,000 jobs in July – the 65th consecutive month of increases in private sector jobs – to criticize her Republican colleagues for not doing enough to keep the economy fired up.
“Our economy continues to expand as companies, particularly small businesses, hire more workers. But the Republicans in Congress have resisted policies that would contribute to our economy and support the millions of men and women who want to work but cannot find jobs. Consider their refusal to renew the Highway Trust Fund, which creates jobs in construction and allows us to build the roads, bridges, and mass transit that we need to compete in the 21st Century. Or recall their refusal to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank, which facilitates international trade and, incidentally, earns a profit for the American people,” said Clarke.
Clarke also noted that since July the Small Business Administration have been suspended because Republican refuse to raise the limit on the total amount of loans.
“The many loans authorized this year by the Small Business Administration – more than 45,000 loans – are an indication that small businesses want to continue to expand, hiring more workers and increasing the size of our economy. I believe Congress has a responsibility to work with the small businesses that are creating most of our jobs,” she said.
Golden Gets Bus Champion Award
Bay Ridge State Sen. Marty Golden, tomorrow, will receive the ‘Bus Champion Award’ from the transit advocacy organization, Riders Alliance.
The GOP lawmaker will get the award for his work advocating for better bus service in New York City.
Specifically, Golden sponsored a bill allowing the City’s Select Bus Service system to expand by ensuring bus-only lanes are enforced, speeding up commute times for over 2 million New Yorkers who rely on bus service every day. That bill passed and awaits the Governor’s signature.
The award ceremony is slated for 6 p.m., tomorrow, Aug. 11, 2015 at Golden’s district office 7408 5th Avenue.
Cymbrowitz, Hikind Commend Schumer on His Iran ‘No’ Vote
Sheepshead Bay Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz and Borough Park Assemblyman Dov Hikind, Friday, commended U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer for taking a “strong and courageous stand” against President Obama’s Iran nuclear deal, paving the way for other members of Congress to follow his lead.
“In speaking out so thoughtfully and passionately, Senator Schumer has done the right thing by not agreeing to a flawed proposal that gives too much leeway to a terrorist regime, leaves Israel and the rest of the Middle East vulnerable to an arms race and ultimately threatens world peace,” said Cymbrowitz.
“His influential voice as the third highest-ranking Democrat in the Senate has opened the door for other members of Congress to express their opposition to the accord, and we can only hope the momentum continues to reach the 60 votes necessary for the resolution of disapproval and veto override,” he added.
Hikind, who was arrested several weeks ago protesting in front of Schumer’s office against the senator for even considering the bill, said he made the right call.
“We applaud Senator Schumer for doing the right thing in opposing the Iran nuclear agreement. We look forward to his continued leadership and urge him to lead the charge in convincing his colleagues of the dangers and risks surrounding this deal,” said Hikind.
