Politics is making for really strange bedfellows in the upcoming special election race to succeed Democrat Alex Brook-Krasny, who stepped down earlier this month from his 46th State Assembly District seat.
That after KCP learned that Brook-Krasny’s former chief of staff, Kate Cucco, who some media outlets say is a lock to get the Democratic Party line, sought out the Conservative Party line on the ballot, and that Party officials have already interviewed her.
The Conservative Party often characterizes itself as the to the right conscience of the Republican Party, much the way the Working Families Party – which endorsed Brook-Krasny in his last election – considers itself the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
“We interviewed three candidates, Kate and two Republicans. All the candidates approached us,” said Conservative Party Chair Gerard Kassar, who also works in GOP State Sen. Marty Golden‘s office. “Kate did extremely well and made a very good impression, but we’re not ready to endorse her or anybody at this point.”
Cucco, who moved from Ohio a little more than seven years ago, said she didn’t see a problem with seeking the Conservative Party nod.
“I’ve always been a Democrat and remain a strong supporter of the ideals of the Democratic Party, with that said as I explore a potential candidacy, I am seeking support from all those that believe my commitment to public service is in the best interest of our community,” said Cucco.
Democratic Female District Leader Delia Schack, who appears to control enough Democratic County Committee votes to secure which of several candidates being considered will get the Party nod, was not available to comment at post time.
But one 46th Assembly District Democratic Party insider said it’s outrageous that Cucco would go after the Conservative Party line.
“If I were being asked to support her (Cucco) and give her the nomination, I would be shocked. The values of the Conservative Party is nowhere near the values of the Democratic Party. It’s almost embarrassing that she would make that claim,” said the source.
The assembly district includes Coney Island and parts of Brighton Beach, Dyker Heights and Bay Ridge.
