Lynch is the first African-American woman to serve as the top law enforcement job in the country. Below are comments by some of Brooklyn’s elected officials.

U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer: “Today is an historic day as Loretta Lynch will take her rightful place at the helm of DOJ. I am confident she will be an exemplary attorney general, and will bring disparate parts of communities across the country together, just as she did in Brooklyn. She will pour every ounce of her energy into keeping America safe, upholding the rule of law, and protecting and restoring voting rights that have been under assault for far too long.”

Congressman Hakeem Jeffries: “After a shameful, partisan delay forced on the American people by Senate Republicans, Loretta Lynch has finally been confirmed as Attorney General. She is a consummate law enforcement professional with an unparalleled track record of keeping communities safe and protecting the civil rights of the vulnerable. Ms. Lynch will make a tremendous Attorney General. Brooklyn’s loss is America’s gain.”

Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson: “I congratulate Loretta Lynch on her historic confirmation as Attorney General of the United States.  I had the honor to serve with Loretta in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.  She’s an extraordinary prosecutor, possesses great integrity and will be relentless in protecting the interests of the American people. I have no doubt that Loretta will serve our nation with honor and distinction. As the first-ever African American woman to serve as Attorney General, this is also a proud moment in our country’s history.”

Mayor Bill de Blasio: “I applaud the Senate for confirming the very capable Loretta Lynch as our nation’s next Attorney General. She will serve all Americans with the same distinction she served New Yorkers. As the U.S. Attorney for New York’s Eastern District, she prosecuted some of the toughest terrorism, fraud, and brutality cases we’ve ever seen and fought for fairness and against inequity at every turn. Her intelligence, character, experience, and unyielding pursuit of justice are exactly what this country needs. Congratulations Ms. Lynch!”

City Councilman Vincent Gentile: “I join my colleagues today in congratulating U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch on being confirmed as our new United States Attorney General. As the top federal prosecutor in Brooklyn, Ms. Lynch certainly proved herself as someone with a deep commitment to defending one set of rules for all and equal justice under law. And in the true spirit of the American dream, as a little girl, Ms. Lynch attended civil rights rallies atop her father’s shoulders. Indeed, Ms. Lynch is supremely qualified in myriad ways for this incredibly important national security and law enforcement post as the first African-American woman Attorney General in the history of the United States of America. This is an incredibly historic moment for our country.”

Williams Addresses Cops Use of Deadly Force

City Councilman Jumaane Williams

Flatbush City Council member Jumaane Williams,Deputy Leader and co-chair of the Council’s Task Force to Combat Gun Violence, released the following statement after cops shot a man to death after he opened fire in a Queens bar last night.

“Based on accounts to date, the officers’ actions were done in accordance with training, and while such incidents are always a sad occasion, it appears that deadly force was used as an appropriate response. There are too many clear and obvious cases of police misconduct, questionable use of force and brutality, but we must resist the knee-jerk temptation to link these officers’ actions to such misfortunes. It is important to remember that when the vast majority of New York residents feel endangered, they will call on the men and women of the NYPD to help and will expect them to act, which appears to be what happened last night.”

Malliotakis, Golden Warn Residents About Phone Scams

Bay Ridge Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis and Southwest Brooklyn State Sen. Marty Golden, yesterday, are urging constituents to remain vigilant against the evolving threat of telephone scams.
The most recent incarnation involves the scammers calling to threaten arrest for failure to pay past taxes owed or utility fees, unless payment is made through a reloadable debit card easily purchased at local stores. The calls are disguised to appear on caller ID screens as numbers belonging to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or National Grid.

“It’s scary to think about the lengths to which these people will go to make a dollar.  The majority of their victims are the elderly and the homebound, some of the most vulnerable people in society.  As most of the calls are coming from outside the country, the most effective way to put an end to this fraud is to make it less lucrative by getting the word out that these calls are not authentic.  Anyone who receives such a call should contact their local police precinct to check the veracity of what’s being
asked of them,” said Malliotakis.

Golden said it seems like almost every day, you hear of people being caught victim of a financial scam involving utilities, computer services, utilities, vacations and more.

“We must remain alert so to keep ourselves from being a victim. We must also make sure our friends and family are aware that these attempts to swindle us exist and any
attempts at being defrauded must be reported to the authorities,” said Golden.
