Democratic Party candidate for the 11th Congressional District seat Vinnie (The Brawler) Gentile is reportedly gearing up for a pugilist photo shoot to let supporters know that a few hours of work on his campaign will earn those volunteering a free ticket into a Bay Ridge bar to watch the highly anticipated pay-per-view Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao fight.
The brainchild behind the idea of tying what some boxing fans are calling the fight of the century with the upcoming May 5 special election between Gentile and Dan (The Irishman) Donovan for the congressional seat is Corey Ortega, Vice President of The New York State Young Democrats (NYSYD) Downstate Region.
“This isn’t just another watch party. It doubles as the (NYSYD) Downstate Region’s Volunteer Operation for the New York Special Elections 11th Congressional District race in support of Vincent Gentile,” said Ortega. “Basically anyone can purchase a $20 ticket, but why? When you can get a free admissions ticket by volunteering 3 hours to a Micro Phone-Banking (for Gentile) hangout session any time before the fight.”
Ortega said the plan calls for having a series of micro phone-banking sites at bars during happy hour in all six downstate counties including Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. Any given session will seen between 3-4 people making calls.
Once a volunteer racks up at least three hours of work they get the free ticket to the May 2 fight, which includes an open bar and buffet before the 11 p.m. fight.
Ortega said Gentile is confirmed to be the main speaker on fight night. Other elected officials co-sponsoring the night and expected to be in attendance include Staten Island Assemblyman Michael Cusick, Bronx Assemblywoman Latoya Joyner, Brooklyn/Staten Island Sen. Diane Savino and Brooklyn City Councilman Steve Levin.
