Bklyn Lawmakers on the Move April 3

Flatbush Sen. Kevin Parker is finalizing the draft of a bill calling for a burn unit medical facility in Brooklyn.

The legislation follows Borough President Eric Adams’ push for a borough burn unit in the wake of the devastating fire over a week ago that killed seven children of the Sassoon family of Midwood. The mother of the Sassoon family and her 15 year old daughter were transferred to separate hospitals each an hour away from the incident site in Midwood.

In December of last year, Parker wrote a letter to Mayor de Blasio and Eric Adams urging the leaders to support a burn unit in Brooklyn. The lawmaker is also starting a Twitter campaign and encourages users to Tweet with the hash tag #BrooklynBurnUnit!

Park Slope City Council member Brad Lander announced, yesterday, that the four-month long strike by workers at the Vegas Auto Spa carwash ended with a new contact and that workers will be off the picket line and back at work on Monday.

The new contract includes wage hikes, strong worker protections like paid time off, sharing of hours and overtime, protections for immigrant workers, and a $1,500 per-person signing bonus. The owner also agreed to settle a suit the workers filed for wage and hour violations.

“It’s an all-around win for the brave workers who so courageously put their jobs on the line, and another win for low wage workers everywhere. When workers stand up for better treatment, their actions have echo effects that stretch far beyond their shop,” said Lander, who along with City Council member Carlos Menchaca, was arrested last month for obstructing traffic while joining the picket line outside the car wash on 19th Street and 7th Avenue, near the Prospect Expressway.

Lander also thanked RWDSU, Make the Road NY, and NY Communities for Change for their assistance in creating an impactful strike and keeping negotiations strong as well as Speaker of the Council Melissa Mark-Viverito and Rabbi Ellen Lippmann, and congregation Kolot Chayeinu for their involvement in the labor movement.

Williams To Hold Easter Egg Hunt

In celebration of this holiday weekend, the office of East Flatbush City Councilman Jumaane Williams along with the East Flatbush Village, Inc. will hold their annual Easter Egg Hunt tomorrow.

The event will allow community members of all faiths to come together as our children participate in this fun-filled festivity, which will include games, prizes, face painting, rides, music, refreshments and more!
