City Council Members Jumaane Williams and Alan Maisel, today, made good on a promise to meet with the management of an adult novelty store bookstore at 2073 Flatbush Avenue – a busy thoroughfare that sits on the border of the lawmaker’s adjacent districts.
Constituents have complained to Maisel and Williams since the shop opened a few months ago and often noted that the adult boutique is located next to the busy Flatlands Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library.
“On behalf of the residents of the 45th and 46th Council Districts, we would like to thank the management of Sexy Wonders for taking the time to have a productive meeting with us and for being receptive to our concerns,” the two lawmakers said in a joint statement. “We are pleased by the progress that has been made since our meeting, which resulted in the store covering their window displays with posters and reevaluating their hours of operation. The establishment is within their legal right to conduct business, and though its opening was met with resistance by constituents, management is doing what they can to address these concerns.”
Maisel and Williams said the primary concern they shared in the meeting was that constituents in the community feel safe and comfortable in their neighborhoods.
“Management showed sensitivity to this issue and followed through on their promise to cover the store window display. We look forward to continuing our partnership to ensure the establishment is not met with counter-productive friction, and will follow up with management to discuss their updated hours once they have completed a trial period,” they said.
