Between yesterday’s bust of three Brooklynites on charges of trying to join up with ISIS and today being the anniversary of the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, City Councilman Chaim Deutsch‘s timing for holding the first of two symposiums on counter-terrorism and safety awareness tonight couldn’t be better.

“In today’s day and age, there is a great necessity in our community for heightened awareness of safety measures that must be addressed. Regrettably, amid recent events here and around the world,  it has become a stark reality that schools, houses of worships, community centers, and other places of assembly are considered targets,” said Deutsch. “We must learn from our past in order to protect our future. The valuable skills and methods that have and will be presented in this series of forums are vital towards improving security in our public places.”

Tonight’s forum will feature speakers from the NYPD Intelligence Bureau, the NYPD Counter-Terrorism Unit and the FDNY. They will cover threat and hazard awareness, planning for and avoiding a disaster, and reacting to an emergency situation.

While the event is open to the public, Deutsch did outreach for the symposiums to all local school parents, administrators, teachers and staff as well as to childcare providers, houses of worship members and congregants, administration and staff of community centers and to clergy members.

When: Tonight at 6 p.m.

Where: Madison High School, 3787 Bedford Avenue (between Avenue P & Quentin Rd)

Part 2 of the symposium is slated for 6 p.m. next Tuesday, March 3, also at Madison High School.
