Williams Jousts with Staten Island Lawmaker
A Staten Island lawmaker took East Flatbush City Council Member Jumaane Williams to task for Tweeting that it was a powerful moment to protest the choke hold death of Eric Garner with a Blood gang member, the New York Observer reported.
GOP Assemblyman Joseph Borelli, whose Staten Island district includes thousands of city police and their families, noted that Blood members killed two cops a decade ago just blocks from where police put a choke hold on the unarmed Garner causing his his death for allegedly selling selling loose cigarettes.
Williams Tweeted over the weekend while protesting Garner’s death, “Most powerful moment: a brother from the Bloods came up 2 me & said we’re here for the movement, ‘for peace’ & ‘I wish more homies were here.’”
Borelli responded on Facebook that for a New York City Council Member to post iy was a ‘powerful moment’ when a Bloods gang member is protesting for the movement, he starts thinking all hope is lost in New York City.
“I do not know what to say to the vast majority of #NYPD who just want to do their job in peace…Or to the majority of NYers who (should) see the Bloods street gang as more of a threat than a police officer,” Borelli wrote in the post.
Williams responded in a tweet to Borelli that, “next time I’ll explain to him that he is incapable of change or productivity and he should just continue his destructive ways.”
Several tweets later, Williams noted that the Bloods member in question offered to help with gang intervention and gun violence work.
