Espaillat Votes On Long Overdue Pay Raise
Representative Adriano Espaillat (D-Washington Heights, Sugar Hill) voted to increase the paychecks of American workers by passing H.R. 582, the Raise The Wage Act.
The act will gradually increase the minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2025, increasing wages for up to 33 million workers in the US.
“Today, New Yorkers are working harder than ever – but workers’ wages are falling further and further behind,” said Espaillat. “After more than a decade without an increase in the federal minimum wage, the longest stretch in U.S. history, hard-working Americans deserve a raise. I am glad New York led the way in increasing our state’s minimum wage to $15 per hour, and I hope this measure will become law so the rest of the nation can join us, because there is no place in America today where a full-time worker making the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour can afford the basic essentials. I am proud to join my Democratic colleagues to take this strong step to deliver on our For The People agenda and give working men and women across the country a well-deserved raise.”
Maloney Pays Respects to Robert Morgenthau
Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens) released a statement yesterday mourning the loss of former Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau.
Morgenthau, New York’s longest serving elected prosecutor, passed away last Monday after a short illness. He was 99.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my dear friend Robert Morgenthau, our City’s legendary district attorney,” said Maloney. “Bob fought to make our city and our world a more just and safe place. His decades long dedication to justice transformed our great city and inspired the next generation of politicians, activists and reformers.”
Rosenthal to Hold Town Hall Meeting on Housing Rights
Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal (D-Upper West Side, Hell’s Kitchen) will be hosting a town hall meeting on housing rights next Tuesday.
At the meeting, Rosenthal will be answering questions about the sweeping reforms that the assembly passed during the latest legislative session.
The event will take place on for Tuesday, July 30 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at B’nai Jerusalem Community House, 270 West 89th St.
Brewer Launches Manhattan Counts Initiative
Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer (D) has launched the “Manhattan Counts” initiative in anticipation of the upcoming 2020 Census.
The initiative will allocate $50,000 towards 10 community-based organizations who come up with innovative, results-oriented ideas to ensure that historically undercounted communities aren’t overlooked. Organizations wishing to apply must go to this page to complete an online application. The 10 winning organizations will be awarded $5,000 each.
“The 2020 Census will determine federal funding and representation for NYC for years to come,” Brewer said in a tweet. “Have an idea for how your community-based org can increase participation within historically under-counted communities? Apply for a $5,000 grant to fund your idea.”
