This long national nightmare is finally over.

Kevin McCarthy was elected Speaker of the House early Saturday morning on the 15th vote after a tense evening of Republican chaos on Capitol Hill.

Eager to confront President Joe Biden and the Democrats, he promised subpoenas and investigations. “Now the hard work begins,” the California Republican declared. He credited former President Donald Trump for standing with him and for making late calls “helping get those final votes.”

McCarthy finally gained a majority of voting members thanks to several far right-wing opponents voting present, including Florida Congress Member Matt Gaetz, who had voted present on the 14th vote Friday evening and denied McCarthy the speakership by a single vote.
