City Councilmember Daniel Dromm (D-Jackson Heights, Elmhurst) issued a statement on Wednesday about the death of 43-year-old Jackson Heights resident Bertha Arriaga, who was killed by a stray bullet earlier that morning:

“I am horrified that another life has been lost to senseless gun violence,” said Dromm. “Bertha Arriaga was killed by a stray bullet inside of her own home. She died simply because she was standing by her window at the worst possible time. Even more tragic is the fact that her young son found her dead. I call upon the NYPD to bring the perpetrator to justice and will do whatever is in my power to assist them. We will not allow Jackson Heights to be consumed by gun violence. My heart goes out to the Arriaga family as they grieve. No one should ever have to experience a loss such as this.”

CM Miller Attends Street Co-Naming for Roxina “Roxie” Clayton

Councilmember I. Daneek Miller

Councilmember I. Daneek Miller (D-Cambria Heights, Hollis, Jamaica, St. Albans, Queens Village, and Springfield Gardens) joined the family and friends of the late Roxina “Roxie” Clayton this past Saturday for a street co-naming ceremony to honor a dedicated and devoted member of the Southeast Queens community who was killed in 2016 by a suspect fleeing the police.

Last year, the City Council passed Local Law 158 which included the proposal by Miller to co-name the southwest street corner at Linden Boulevard and 225th Street in memoriam to the lifelong volunteer and community fixture.

“A dedicated mother, grandmother, and volunteer, Ms. Roxina Clayton was taken from us far too soon. By enshrining her legacy in the fabric of our community with this street co-naming, we recognize a woman who quietly touched the lives of so many,” said Miller.

Clayon was a staple of the community and regularly volunteered her time caring for the elderly, working with Meals on Wheels and Rockaway Revue senior center performances. A civil servant, she worked at the New York City Transit Authority for twenty-five years, rising from a Relief Token Booth Clerk to Train Dispatcher, before her retirement in 1996. She is survived by three children, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. (D-Howard Beach, Ozone Park, Woodhaven, Glendale, Middle Village, Maspeth and parts of South Ozone Park, Ridgewood, Woodside and The Rockaways) is partnering with Assemblymember Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-Broad Channel, Hamilton Beach, Howard Beach, Lindenwood, Ozone Park, Rockaway Peninsula) and the Queens Chamber of Commerce to bring a virtual resume building webinar event to help constituents prepare to re-enter the workforce.

“Having a clean and concise resume and cover letter could mean the difference between landing a job and missing out on a great opportunity. And as we continue to adjust to a post-COVID world, learning virtual interview skills is a must,” Addabbo said. “I am hopeful that this event will help those looking for work gain the necessary skills to find employment during these trying times, especially ahead of my scheduled Virtual Job Fair event later in October.”

The workshop comes as thousands of New Yorkers are still out of work due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

“With great financial instability and a difficult job market due to the pandemic, it is so important to give every job seeker the tools to capitalize on every opportunity,” Pheffer Amato said. “By providing resume building, cover letter, and interview skills we are hoping to do our part to help hard working people get back on their feet as they look for a new job.”

This workshop will focus on building up the skills needed for writing a resume, cover letter, and other aspects to land and then succeed at a potential interview.

The free Resume Writing and Interview Skills Virtual Workshop will be held on Zoom on Wednesday, October 7, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.. Participants must register in advance.
