Maloney Attends India Day Parade

Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens) was present at the annual India Day Parade yesterday.

The parade, which spanned from 38th to 25th Street down Madison Avenue, commemorated the 73rd anniversary of India’s independence from the British Empire.

“Today I celebrated 73 years of Indian independence at the annual NYC India Day Parade!” Maloney said in a tweet. “In Congress, I’ve worked to recognize this beautiful culture by issuing a commemorative Diwali stamp & introducing leg to award Gandhi a Congressional gold medal. Happy Independence Day!”

City Council Member Ben Kallos (D-Yorkville, Lenox Hill) was delighted to hear of the opening of a bike lane extension at the mouth of the Queensboro Bridge on Second Avenue.

The extension, which opened last Friday, closed one of the last existing gaps on Second Avenue’s bike lane network. Kallos remarked that the change turned what was previously a “deathtrap” into a safe haven for cyclists.

“Pedestrian and cyclist safety is first and foremost in my office,” said Kallos. “The Second Avenue bike gap was dangerous; a tragedy waiting to happen.”
